Local martial-arts school brings kung fu cinema to Signal Hill

Grammy Award-winner Jojo Garza, bass player and singer of the Chicano rock band Los Lonely Boys, along with renowned Grandmasters Eric Lee and Samuel Kwok brought a little Hong Kong action to action-film director Art Camacho’s newest movie, The Chemist, last week at West Coast Wing Chun martial-arts school in Signal Hill.

Three scenes were shot inside West Coast Wing Chun’s new location on Junipero Avenue. Master Bryan Talbot, owner and chief instructor of the kwoon (school), and his disciple, Siu Lo Si Serj Macias, a Signal Hill native, performed stunts in the movie.

Wing chun kung fu is no stranger to cinema. According to West Coast Wing Chun, it is a very unique and scientific form of martial arts that originates from China and was later refined in Hong Kong by the late Great Grand Master Ip Man. There have been several movies about Ip Man in recent years, including the award-winning Ip Man and Grand Masters. Ip Man was also Sifu to the late Bruce Lee.
