At 10:04am [on Sept. 30], California Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 270 into law, making California the first state in the nation to enact a statewide ban on single-use plastic bags. The ban will take effect in July 2015.
This is history, in the moment, right now. And Heal the Bay was there from day one, thanks to support from you and thousands of other activists.
From inner-city schools in South LA to late-night confabs at the Capitol, we’ve mobilized everyday Californians in reaching our goal of eliminating this ocean-choking and neighborhood-blighting menace from our state. We’re grateful to all of you for supporting us on this journey, as well as to Senators Alex Padilla, Kevin de León and Ricardo Lara— SB 270’s co-authors.
Today we celebrate, but the battle to heal Southern California is far from over.
