Long Beach City Manager Pat West announced last week the process for selecting a new police chief, in anticipation of current chief Jim McDonnell winning the seat of Los Angeles County sheriff. McDonnell did indeed win as sheriff in Tuesday’s election.
West plans to conduct an expedited recruitment process of internal candidates. All Long Beach deputy chiefs and commanders are eligible to apply for the position, and all interested candidates will be reviewed and interviewed.
“We have such strong internal candidates within our police department,” West said. “Each and every member of our police command staff are ready today to be chief, giving Long Beach a strong, diverse pool of candidates to pick from.”
The process has begun, now that the election is over, according to the City, which also indicated that there is no expectation that an interim chief will be necessary.
