The Rotary Club of Signal Hill and Rotary District 5320 will honor Robert and Nancy Long of Signal Hill on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the annual Rotary District 5320 Foundation dinner.
Over 10 years ago, the Longs started donating funds and school supplies to assure every Signal Hill student in grades kindergarten through 5 in a package of classroom supplies at the beginning of the school year, according to the Signal Hill Rotary. After Nancy’s death, Robert established the Nancy Long Foundation, which partnered with the Rotary Club of Signal Hill to package and deliver the school supplies.
“In addition to the Longs’ commitment to early childhood education, in 2013 Robert Long donated over $150,000 to the Rotary International’s Donor Advised Fund in memory of his wife Nancy,” states a press release from the Signal Hill Rotary. “Long has requested that the Rotary International Foundation use the donation to promote ongoing ‘clean water and sanitation’ programs throughout the world.”
Robert Long is a graduate of Stanford with a degree in geology, he worked in the oil industry in Signal Hill for decades, and his father was a founding member of the Petroleum Club, according to the Signal Hill Rotary. He is an officer in the Preservation Organization of Signal Hill, and he has volunteered for many years as a precinct supervisor for elections, according to the Signal Hill Rotary. Nancy Long was a longtime community volunteer, a Civil Service commissioner and a small-business owner, according to the Rotary.
Rotary Club members will be present to pay tribute to the Longs for their service to Signal Hill students and their commitment to provide clean water for people of the world.
