A CREEPY, CRAWLY PRESENTATION
Friends of Long Beach Animals will have its annual membership meeting and election tonight at 6:30 at the Signal Hill Community Center, 1780 E. Hill Street. The evening’s topic will be “Walk on the Wild Side.” The public is invited to meet Steve Strichart of the Southern California Herpetology Association and LBAC Officer Kevin Law and enjoy their presentation about creatures that crawl. RUMMAGE THROUGH…..FOR A GOOD CAUSE
St. Barnabas Church, 3955 Orange Avenue, will be having a rummage sale Saturday, August 2 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. to benefit the Austen Mayer family. Austen, a former student of St. Barnabas and current parishioner, was recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, and all proceeds will help with medical costs. Wrigley panel Discussion
The Wrigley Association will host a panel discussion on air pollution Monday, Aug. 4 at 7 p.m. at Veterans Park, 101 E. 28th St., LB. Panelists include: AQMD rep and 7th District Councilperson Tonia Reyes-Uranga; Coalition for Clean Air rep Candice Sung Kim, speaking about the port’s clean truck program; and Port of Long Beach Director for Environmental Planning Rick Cameron. KID-FRIENDLY NIGHT OUT
The Signal Hill Police Department will have its 5th Annual National Night Out on Tuesday, August 5 from 4 pm to 7 pm, at Reservoir Park, 3315 Gundry Avenue. This is a nationwide event that encourages communities to join in partnership with police departments across the country in an attempt to discourage crime. The evening will include activities such as balloon art, face painting, an art maker, a bounce house, bicycle reflectors provided by Target, bike helmets from Knights of Pythias, and free child identification kits. (Kids should bring bikes.) A DJ will be providing music, and the Police Mobile Command Vehicle and the L.A. County Station 60 fire truck will both be on site for viewing.

FREE FAMILY FUN!
The Long Beach Municipal Band will be performing its summer concert of “Those Swinging Years” at various parks on various nights. All performances begin at 6:30 p.m. on the following dates: Tuesday, Aug. 5 at Bixby Park, 130 Cherry Avenue; Wednesday, August 6 at Los Cerritos Park, 3750 Del Mar Ave.; Thursday, Aug. 7 at Marine Stadium, 5255 Paoli Way; and Friday, Aug. 8 at El Dorado Park, Studebaker Road & Willow St. For more info, call (562) 570-3100 or visit www.lbparks.org.

WITHOUT A LENS
During the month of August, the Long Beach Museum of Art will present three children’s workshops exploring the art of pinhole photography. The workshops, which are offered free of charge to children ages 7—14, are based on the museum’s current exhibition The Art of Commerce: William Livingston’s Pinhole Photographs of the Port of Long Beach. The workshops are scheduled for: August 10— Landscapes; August 17— Architecture and Still Life; and August 24— Figures. Each workshop lasts two hours and is scheduled from 1 p.m. — 3 p.m. Adult chaperones must remain on the museum’s campus while children are in the workshop. GET LIT!
The August selection for the Bixby Knolls Literary Society is The Golden Spur by Dawn Powell. The book tells the story of Jonathan Jamison who, at the age of 26, leaves his Ohio home in search of his father in Greenwich Village. Jonathan’s mother had worked as a typist briefly in the Village before she returned home and married what she found a rather conventional man. She delivered prematurely and told Jonathan that his true father was in New York. And Jonathan goes to search for his father- and himself. CANCER SURVIVORS LECTURE
Long Beach Memorial will host a lecture entitled “Cancer Patients, Survivors and Loved Ones” on Thursday, August 14 at 6 p.m. at Cal State Long Beach’s Soroptimist House, 5900 Beach Drive.
