The Memorial Medical Center Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting Long Beach-based Miller Children’s Hospital, announced last week that it has received a $750,000 grant from the Los-Angeles based Ahmanson Foundation. The funds will help construct a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in the hospital’s new 124,000-square foot-inpatient pavilion, currently under construction.
The donation is the most recent grant supporting the Building for Children: Heroes Helping Heroes Campaign.
As one of only two freestanding children’s hospitals in Los Angeles County, Miller Children’s Hospital is undertaking a major expansion in response to the growing needs of the community.
One area in need of expansion is the hospital’s 69-bed regional level Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, as approved by California Children Services (CCS).
The Miller Children’s Hospital expansion project will add 24 additional neonatal beds, with space to double in size to a 48-bed unit.
The additional space will enhance the hospital’s specialized physicians and nursing staff’s ability to continue providing life-sustaining care for sick and premature infants— even babies born remarkably early.
“Thanks to the Ahmanson Foundation, Miller Children’s Hospital will offer one of the largest Neonatal Intensive Care Units in California,” said Terry A. Belmont, chief executive officer, Miller Children’s Hospital and Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. “This gift will help us fulfill our mission of saving and improving the lives of the children and families we serve.”
