Food Finders, a Signal Hill-based food rescue organization, is currently undertaking its annual holiday food drive to collect food for those in need during the holiday season. The drive will continue through Dec. 31.
Food Finders is encouraging neighborhoods, schools, libraries and businesses to serve as drop-off locations for non-perishable food items and will supply collection bins to those interested in participating. The more participation community-wide, the more successful the holiday food drive will be for agencies that depend on the service Food Finders provides, according to the nonprofit.
Those who prefer to make a monetary donation can do so as well. A $25 donation will help feed two families a turkey dinner. Fifty dollars will buy four families a turkey dinner, and with every $25 increase, an additional two families can be fed. Monetary donations may be made by check or through the Food Finders website.
“The generosity of our community year after year ensures that more families can have a special meal at Thanksgiving,” said Patti Larson, executive director for Food Finders. “We thank our donors of food and funds for helping us provide meals to families during the entire holiday season and throughout the year.”
In addition to collecting holiday meal staples, such as canned vegetables, meats, pasta, pasta sauce, stuffing, bread, cookies and more, Food Finders will also be accepting pet food to help out pet owners and their four-legged friends.
The Thanksgiving packing and sorting event, a major component to the holiday food drive, will take place on Friday, Nov. 21, from 6pm to 8pm at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 11600 Los Alamitos Blvd., in Los Alamitos. Volunteers gather in the church gym to sort canned items and pack the boxes of food that are collected. Volunteers are also needed to distribute donated food and turkeys to agencies and families on Saturday, Nov. 22 from 10am to 2pm.
