The City of Signal Hill is advising motorists to use detour routes during the construction period for the widening of Cherry Avenue, the City announced Jan. 9.
The project calls for adding two new traffic lanes, one going southbound and one going northbound, on Cherry Avenue between Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) and 19th Street.
In addition, a new shared through/right-turn lane is being added on southbound Cherry Avenue, in order to allow more cars to turn onto PCH.
The project also includes new asphalt paving, curb and sidewalk improvements, improved surface drainage, a new traffic signal and a new landscape median. The traffic signal will replace the one at PCH and Cherry Avenue to accommodate the intersection widening.
Since Caltrans is requiring that the new traffic signal be operational before the major road-widening activities can proceed, most of the actual road construction will take place between January and May 2015.
