Last Saturday, Jan. 24, the neighborhood came out in force to participate in the e-waste drive and document shred event [at Hughes Middle School] hosted by Eagle Scout candidate Will Whitney, the Hughes [Middle School] Green Team and me. The event collected over 20 pallets of e-waste, which filled almost three flat-bed trucks. The document-shredding station was equally popular, taking in so many boxes of material that the shred truck was filled just an hour and half after the event opened, and a second truck had to be called in. Shredding went on until 3pm. Neighbors were incredibly generous to Whitney, donating over $1,000 for his project to install rain barrels at the Hughes campus.
It was heartwarming to see how many times friends and neighbors posted and reposted the event. In particular, thanks to The Signal Tribune, [Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association Executive Director] Blair Cohn, [California Heights Neighborhood Association President] John Royce [and] Council persons Al Austin and Roberto Uranga for sharing the event press release and Facebook and Nextdoor announcements with our great community of Bixby Knolls, Cal Heights, Signal Hill and Long Beach. Special thanks as well to the Whitney Family for providing food and drinks for the volunteers. Response to the event was so strong, we may offer another event in the coming months— so stay tuned!
