The owners of the Raymond Avenue home above have been chosen to receive the City of Signal Hill’s Sustainability Award.
Over the course of three years, in addition to improvements to the interior of their home, the Ashworths have completely renovated the landscaping of their residence, creating three additional living areas, with the assistance of a friend, according to the City. They removed about 25Â yards of concrete, block walls and bricks, along with overgrown succulents and cacti which made the yard inaccessible and unfriendly to their small children, according to the City. Those plants were donated to friends and landscape architects for replanting.
The front yard now includes decorative fencing, artificial turf, pavers, stones, feather grass, succulent plantings, a rock garden, drip-line irrigation and automated timers. The paved portion of the parkway has also been cleared and planted with low-lying grasses and shrubs that allow for water percolation and help to create a healthy environment for street trees, according to the City.
