The Long Beach Playhouse will host local artist Donald Tiscareno’s exhibit entitled Canyons from Wednesday, April 15 through Sunday, May 31.
“As subject matter, I focused on canyons of southwestern United States and Mexico,” Tiscareno said. “The paintings are mostly on canvas with textured mixed media and painted with oils.”
Although he describes himself as well traveled, it wasn’t until later in life that the now 74-year-old artist had seen a particularly popular canyon in the U.S.
“I have traveled all over the world but had never visited the Grand Canyon until I was in my mid 60s,” he said. “I abhor the use of the word ‘awesome,’ which is repetitive and overused to the point that it has lost all of its meaning. However, the Grand Canyon is truly awesome, and nothing else even comes close.”
Tiscareno said an additional inspiration for his show were the opening lines of Joni Mitchell’s song “Both Sides Now” : “Bows and flows of angel hair and ice cream castles in the air and feather canyons everywhere.”
An opening reception for the exhibit will take place Wednesday, April 15 from 5pm to 8pm at the Long Beach Playhouse, which is located at 5021 Anaheim St. The public is invited to attend.
