I think that this proposed ordinance is a waste of time [“LB city staff to propose ‘multi-housing habitability ordinance’ while group calls for landlord accountability,” Jan. 2, 2015]. Property owners for the most part in Long Beach are good landlords. I think the City of Long Beach is looking for more revenue! It will increase fees, for sure, to hire additional inspectors. If the tenant has an issue with their unit and complains to the landlord and the landlord does nothing about an issue, then the City should get involved, and only then.
Next, tenant advocacy groups [will] want a [Real Estate Associate Program] and then will probably want rent control.
It’s going to hurt property values in Long Beach with all these new proposed regulations and inspections and will reduce the tax base. I know property [sic] that are planning to sell their units and purchase outside of Long Beach. I say there are other, more pressing issues in the city of Long Beach, like how to help the homeless.
