Signal Hill Rotary Club President Robert Mendoza accepts the Rotary International District 5320 “Club of the Year” (Small) for 2014-2015 during the district conference on Catalina Island earlier this month.
Signal Hill Rotary members have participated in activities such as the City of Signal Hill’s 90th anniversary celebration; Rotaract’s sand sculpture event; an “End Polio Now” fundraiser; the donation of funds and the assembly of more than 900 school-supply kits for students at Signal Hill and Alvarado elementary schools and Long Beach Rescue Mission.
Rotarians joined the Salvation Army in raising funds for US Veterans, and the club won Salvation Army’s first-place Bell Ringer Award.
Members also marched in the Martin Luther King Day Parade and volunteered their time at the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA), which provides scholarships and leadership training to promising junior high school students. Members volunteered to pack and deliver the City of Signal Hill’s brown-bag food to needy seniors.
During the year, Rotary District 5320 Foundation, the nonprofit arm of Rotary International, honored longtime members Robert and Nancy Long’s $150,000 perpetual-fund donation to promote clean water and sanitation around the world.
