Letter: Half a century, plus one

The members of the Rotary Club of Signal Hill are grateful to the community for their support in helping to create the successful celebration of our 51st year. The event held at the Petroleum Club last Thursday was attended by over 100 Rotarians, city officials and community members.
The jazz-filled gala event also helped to raise over $2,500 that will provide the funds needed for the Rotary Club of Signal Hill to again provide another year full of service projects targeted to the community. Signal Hill residents and businesses stepped up to donate dozens of items (restaurant vouchers, car washes, spa packages, gift cards, theater tickets, etc.) that helped create a very fun and successful raffle. Thank you, Signal Hill.
Rotary President Bob Mendoza was recognized for his past year of leadership and will serve as president again this year. Under Mendoza’s leadership, Rotary has increased its membership 200 percent and looks to induct three to four more new members by month’s end. Nancy Lauer and Lance Woods were honored as Club Rotarians Of The Year.
Rotary is planning another year of service to the community by again providing a package full of school supplies to every student of Signal Hill’s elementary schools and middle school. This year Rotary again hopes to participate in the Martin Luther King Day parade, send several 11th-grade students to the annual Rotary youth leadership retreat and partner with the City of Signal Hill to help with the senior food distribution program.
Another highlight of the evening was the attendance of Rotary District 5320 Governor Jim Paddock, who was on hand to induct our two newest Rotarians: branch manager of Security National Mortgage, Polly Adams, and retired Long Beach Police Commander Charles Parks.
Mr. Paddock also installed the new slate of club officers for 2015-16: Bob Mendoza, president; Dave Swidrak, secretary/treasurer; Bob Long, Seargent-at-Arms; John Walker, director and chair of Club Administration; Al Gerbino, director; Nancy Lauer, chair service projects; Carol Churchill, foundation chair; John Goya and Lance Woods, co-chairs membership; and Dr. Phyllis Hayes-Reams, chair Public Image Committee.
Any community member can join us at our weekly meeting 7:30 Thursday mornings at Curley’s Cafe, 1999 E. Willow St., Signal Hill.
Thanks, Signal Hill, for your support.
