Long Beach Memorial Medical Center and Miller Children’s Hospital hosted a 106th birthday celebration for long-time volunteer Karel Spak, who has volunteered for more than 47 years and has donated more than 21,139 hours to the hospitals.
A group of 106 nursing students, patients, staff and fellow volunteers gathered to sing “Happy Birthday” and celebrate the special day with the guest of honor.
Karel says her secret to a long life is simple: “Do what you want to do, eat what you want to eat and volunteer- I wouldn’t have lived so long if it weren’t for my volunteer work.”
