Repaving of Bixby Road between Atlantic and Orange avenues has been underway, and crews are making timely progress, according to Heather Morrison, communications deputy for 8th District Long Beach Councilmember Al Austin’s office.
Crews have been working the last few weeks on the road to: replace damaged curbs, gutters, sidewalks, alley entrances and driveways; trim and root-shave trees; and resurface the street.

The contractor, Sulley-Miller Contracting Company, will use an expedited work schedule to complete the construction before the new school year begins in early September, to avoid disrupting traffic around Hughes Middle and Longfellow Elementary schools, according to Austin’s office.
“Bixby Road is a very heavily used route that was in need of serious repair,” Austin said. “It sits adjacent to two schools with a total student population of over 2,600. I am very happy that we were able to allocate resources to complete this important project during the summer months when school is not in session.”
Austin added that the newly paved road will allow more neighborhood kids to safely walk and bike to Longfellow and Hughes.
Residential street and sidewalk repairs are also underway on Silva Street, Brayton Avenue, Hardwick Street and Gardenia Avenue in the neighborhood north of Del Amo between Orange and Cherry avenues.
