A sewage spill Tuesday morning in San Gabriel resulted in a beach closure for all open coastal swimming areas in Long Beach. The spill was reported by the Los Angeles County Sanitation District. The volume of the spill was estimated at approximately 250,000 gallons and was still ongoing at press time. The spill entered the storm system approximately 33 miles upstream from Long Beach.
Long Beach Health Officer Dr. Mitchell Kushner ordered all swimming areas in Long Beach’s open coastal beaches closed for water contact, pending lab results confirming that the water is safe for swimming.
