At President Barack Obama’s invitation to numerous mayors around the country, Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia flew to Washington, D.C. this week to welcome his Holiness Pope Francis to the White House.
Garcia and other dignitaries joined the President on the South Lawn as Pope Francis arrived.
“I’m incredibly honored to join the President and First Lady as they welcome Pope Francis to the White House and the United States,” Garcia said. “Long Beach welcomes his leadership in addressing worldwide challenges to climate change, immigration and poverty.”
Garcia added, “Pope Francis has been an incredibly humble leader and has developed a very positive agenda. I especially appreciate his inclusiveness and openness. He reminds us of how important it is to focus on the poor and the hungry.”
Garcia also joined a group of mayors at the White House for a meeting with White House executive staff. Garcia updated the Administration on Long Beach’s efforts to end veteran homelessness and Port-related issues.
“The White House has been a great supporter of many of our initiatives, and they are truly committed to Long Beach,” Garcia said.
