The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) will host its annual Chrysanthemum Show on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Sunday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Visitors can take pleasure in tasting fine Japanese teas as they stroll through the garden and behold chrysanthemum vignettes. This year, displays will focus on the aesthetic and horticultural exchange of plants and styles that took place between Meiji Japan and Victorian England after the Meiji Restoration in 1868, when Japan opened its borders to the world once again.
“The beauty of mixing garden styles and practices from Meiji period Japan and Victorian England will be explored through a subtle mixture of eastern and western materials such as potted bamboo with a scrolled-metal arbor,” explained Alison Redfoot, assistant director for education at the garden. “Visitors will be able to learn about this historical commingling of styles as well as get ideas for their own gardens.”
Those in attendance will view flowers in a nationally juried show by the Chrysanthemum Society of Orange County. Blue-ribbon winners in many shapes and colors will be on display. Many varieties, including cut and potted mums, also will be available for purchase throughout the two-day event.
Guests will also have an opportunity to try their hand at art activities including aquatinting photographs and aquarelle painting, both of which are inspired by the beauty of the chrysanthemum.
The Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden is located on Earl Warren Drive, directly across from Lot 16 on the CSULB campus. Admission to the event is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and $5 for Japanese Garden members. Children 12 and under will be admitted free.
