Locals and other groupies that share an appetite for pizza and live music fill up DiPiazza’s red diner booths. There’s a different band scheduled and a $4 drink special, courtesy of the bar staff, every day.
While the sun is still setting the crowd kicks the doors in at 4 p.m. when the restaurant opens. The owner, Mark DiPiazza, gathers local and touring country, punk, and alternative rock bands with a strong following to provide the night life.
Sexy, dangerous art and novelty record covers adorn the walls everywhere. While receiving a brightly colored wristband from the doorman, patrons can find info about the current and upcoming entertainment on the front door.
TVs can be seen from all angles, satisfying today’s A.D.D. by watching the game and a band at the same time. Of course, there’s a Monday night football special- a pint and a cheeseburger or 10″, 2-item pizza for $10.
There may be a cover charge, usually $7, which gives the bands a chance to play for some coin. On top of that, it’s greatly encouraged to support local artists by purchasing a CD if they’re available. Sometimes a band will have the perfect sound but they’re too fresh to have a recording. Either way it’s all part of history in the making.
Bands always urge listeners to stand as close as possible to the stage, but those enjoying their booth usually stay near the sweet smell of pizza rather than the overwhelming odor of teen spirit.
Patrons generally range from 18 to 30, but if there’s a mature band they’ll draw an older crowd. Surprisingly, on Sunday nights during the all ages shows, kids from 12 to 65 come in to support their friends and family.
One such family came in recently on a Sunday just to hear their son’s band, Elephant Talk. They said DiPiazza’s amenities outshine other venues where the band has played because of the pizza and the comfortable atmosphere.
There’s a genre for everyone, and the crowd is always friendly. For example, those waiting for the progressive-pop-rock headliner mingle while a heavy metal band opens for the night. Don’t be surprised if one of the bands becomes famous on the next iPod commercial. Some bands even shoot music videos here, as the energy is always red-hot.
DiPiazza’s is located at 5205 E. P.C.H. Hours of operation are 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. every day. Last call depends on demands. For more info call (562) 498-2461.
