It’s hard to believe that Earth Day was founded 46 years ago in 1970— the year I turned 15 years old. Another focus this week is called “Pamper Your Pets.” ( see pages 12—13) Within those pages you will find information about America’s Family Pet Expo. The event takes place today, tomorrow and Sunday at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa. Steve and I love attending the expo and have learned a lot about new pet products as well as having a chance to see, and in some cases, touch animals that we rarely or never see. If you go, please remember to leave your own pets at home.
Also featured this week is a page dedicated to the Signal Hill Chamber of Commerce and its members (see page 5). Printed at the top of the page is information regarding their upcoming luncheon meeting. Speaking of the Signal Hill Chamber of Commerce, they have just welcomed a new business member, Batteries and Bulbs. Located at 2520 Cherry Ave. in Signal Hill, the new operation celebrated its grand opening Monday, April 18 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that had been arranged through the city’s chamber of commerce. Owner Tim Quinlan was on hand to meet and greet attendees, give them a tour of his new store and then treat them to an area for refreshments that included a fresh taco bar.
Straying from our special section theme, I have two issues to share with you.
First, the City of Signal Hill’s public library will be closed temporarily starting May 2 while they prepare for the building of their new facility. A temporary library will be reopening in the Signal Hill Community Center in early June. Library personnel will be hosting an informal farewell event on Thursday, April 28 from 4pm to 6pm in the library’s meeting room. Those attending will have a chance to share memories and learn more about the plans for the new library.
Second, the store Conversation Pieces, located at 1150 E. Wardlow Rd., was recently vandalized which resulted in the breakage of one of their front windows. Owner of the business, Audrey Ng, came up with a creative way to pay for the replacement of the window; she is hosting a bake sale at her shop this Saturday and Sunday from 9am to 2pm. What a great idea— neighbors helping neighbors. Switching back to the topic of Earth Day, I want to remind our readers that it is illegal to dispose of computers and other electronic devices in the trash. Instead, according to a recent press release, Goodwill Serving the People of Southern Los Angeles County (SOLAC) encourages folks to bring old electronics to any of their centers for repair or recycling. Goodwill SOLAC refurbishes and resells computers. You can donate working computers to fund job training and placement programs, as well as safely recycle used computers, video games, storage devices and more. If you want to learn more about the program, visit ThinkGood.org .
