I love coffee. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s hot, cold, fresh, instant, day-old, home-brewed or prepared at an up-scale coffee extravaganza location. I will even chew the beans if necessary. Java makes me happy.
I’m also proud to say that I appreciate tea, as well, and the stronger, the better. Why do I use the word “proud” when I speak of tea? It is my understanding that Eleanor Roosevelt also relished her tea. After all, it is said that one of Eleanor’s favorite quotes is: “A woman is like a tea bag— you can’t tell how strong she is until you put her in hot water.”
Speaking of strong women, Assemblymember Patrick O’Donnell recently honored 27 women of the 70th Assembly District who go above and beyond for the community. His annual Women of Distinction event this year took place April 22 in downtown Long Beach at the law office of Keesal, Young and Logan. Also honored was his Woman of the Year— longtime community advocate, Chan Hopson.
Regarding the event, in a recent press release, Assemblymember O’Donnell is quoted as saying, “I am grateful for the opportunity to recognize the inspirational role these women play in the lives of others and express our appreciation for their invaluable contributions.”
This year’s Women of Distinction honorees are: LaDawn Best, Marilyn Bittle, Becky Blair, Karen Bloch, Cheyenne Bryant, Herlinda Chico, Alissa Cohn, Bev Cook, Laverne Duncan, Diana Eastman, Lana Farfan, Rae Gabelich, Linda Grimes, Michele Grubbs, Melissa Guy, Judie Jacobus, Kimberly Johnson, Adele Langworthy, Cheryl McKnight, Jan Maize, Kathryn Miles, Cindy Orozco, Pearline Railey-Neal, Caroline Rickard, Laura Som McMillin, Andrea Sulsona and Mona Sutton.
Before the honorees were presented, a lovely young woman by the name of Jacie Cortez gave her personal thanks to the honorees by reciting her original poem entitled “Enduring Woman.” Watching and listening to this young, and obviously strong, woman offer her moving words, touched me deeply. Here are her words:
