Home, safe, home | May 13

[aesop_character name=”By Signal Hill Mayor Lori Woods” align=”center”] It is not too late to join your neighbors and fellow Signal Hill community members in participating in this years’ mayors theme: Emergency Preparedness. In fact, the only time it is too late to prepare is the moment after a disaster occurs.
This theme will continue to be developed throughout the coming months right here in this Signal Tribune-featured column, at each city council meeting and at various community events this year.
“21 Weeks to Prepare” is a simple shopping list designed to build your home emergency kit and will provide enough food, water and basic emergency supplies for a family of four that will last three to five days.
Below is the shopping list for week 3. Cut it out and take it with you on your next shopping trip, or take a picture of it with that handy Smartphone you have. The American Red Cross “21 Weeks to Prepare” makes it very easy to equip you and your family for any disaster just one shopping trip at a time. Don’t forget to customize your emergency kit to accommodate your baby, senior, pets, small children, etc.

Look for the Go Signal Hill app from your Smartphone app store. Once the app is loaded onto your device, spend some time exploring its ease of use and how much information is now at your fingertips about Signal Hill.
One of the first places on the app that I’d like you to check out is under the police department shield logo. Here you’ll find our police department’s mission statement and, just under that, a link to public service announcement videos. The very first link will take you to our Map Your Neighborhood public service announcement video.
Now that you are adding emergency-preparedness shopping to your routine, the next step will be to get with other neighbors and implement The Map Your Neighborhood (MYN) program. This program is the next phase of our citywide preparedness plan and is another easy and practical way to make us all more resilient in the face of a disaster. Look to become the MYN leader on your block!
Looking forward: Signal Hill Police Department Annual Open House on Saturday, May 14, 10am —1pm. Please stop by 2745 Walnut Ave. and take a tour of the facilities, and be sure to stop by the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) table to sign up for our next CERT training class to join our growing team of residents receiving specialized training to provide skills and leadership during a citywide emergency.
