LB officials say airport is ready for more summer travelers than usual

Long Beach Airport (LGB) officials are expecting a busier-than-normal summer as the airport prepares to serve new passengers.
A new airline and new routes will add to the visitors in Long Beach during the travel season. With Southwest Airlines scheduled to begin service in Long Beach and JetBlue adding flights and an extra destination, city officials say the airport is ready to welcome more travelers.
“With the new Southwest routes and the convenience and great atmosphere of our airport, tourists have every reason to vacation in Long Beach this summer,” said Mayor Robert Garcia.
Southwest Airlines will begin flying between Long Beach and Oakland four times a day, starting June 5, and Delta has modernized its fleet to handle more capacity during the summer travel season.
“The Long Beach Airport continues to be the best way to fly, and we are pleased with the new routes being offered to passengers,” said 5th District Councilmember Stacy Mungo. “Our airport provides a unique and local travel experience thanks to our acclaimed staff, safety record and terminal.”
JetBlue plans to expand service across the West Coast. In August, nonstop service will begin between Long Beach and Reno. They will also expand their service from Long Beach to Oakland, San Francisco and Las Vegas by adding an additional daily flight to each destination. In September, departure and arrival times for trips between Long Beach and Sacramento will be adjusted to accommodate customers who travel frequently between both airports and allow travelers to take day trips between the two destination cities.
“Along with being operationally prepared to handle new routes and passengers, airport staff is eager to provide our famed, first-rate customer service to summer travelers,” said Interim LGB Airport Director Juan López-Rios. “We recommend that passengers plan ahead and arrive at least 60 to 90 minutes prior to departure to ensure an enjoyable experience at Long Beach Airport.”
Travelers are encouraged to do what they can to ensure their summer travels go smoothly, such as checking their airline’s baggage rules online ahead of time, registering for TSA PreCheck and checking their airline’s website or app. Passengers may download the free LGB Airport app on their Apple or Android devices; the app provides information on arrivals, departures, parking, shopping, dining and more.
