Community workshop to address outbreak of meningitis

In response to the recent meningitis outbreak of 22 confirmed cases in Los Angeles County— five of which are in Long Beach— State Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) is teaming up with 1st District Long Beach Councilmember Lena Gonzalez, Long Beach Lesbian & Gay Pride, the LGBTQ Center of Long Beach and Hamburger Mary’s restaurant to raise awareness about the outbreak and encourage vaccinations among the LGBTQ community.
Fifty percent of the funds raised from drink and food purchases at the event will go to the LGBTQ Center of Long Beach for meningitis public education and outreach.
“The recent meningitis outbreak is a public health concern for all residents, including those who identify as LGBTQ,” Lara said. “I am proud to collaborate with local leaders and organizations to raise awareness and encourage individuals to get vaccinated.”
The event will take place Friday July 22 from 5pm to 8pm at Hamburger Mary’s Long Beach, 330 Pine Ave. For more information contact Tonya Martin at (562) 256-7921.
