Free event to supply kids with backpacks, more

Eighth District Councilmember Al Austin, in partnership with a number of community organizations, will help more than 1,000 kids get ready for the start of school, according to Austin’s office.
On Saturday, schoolchildren are scheduled to receive backpacks filled with school supplies, as well as free haircuts, immunizations, resource information, free food and health, dental and vision screenings at the 8th District office’s annual Back to School Summer Blast.
The free end-of-summer event will take place on Saturday, Aug. 20 between 10am and 1pm by the tennis courts at Scherer Park, located at Del Amo Boulevard and 49th Street.
“This is the fifth year the 8th District has hosted the Back to School Summer Blast, and it is always one of the highlights of the year for me,” Austin said. “Ensuring that our kids are healthy and return to school with the tools they need to learn is so important.”
The event will also feature a balloon artist, face painting, arts and crafts, opportunity drawings and entertainment.
Kaiser Permanente and Benevolence Health Centers will conduct health screenings and provide free immunizations (parents and guardians are asked to bring their children’s immunization records). Gesu Optical will provide free vision screenings and glasses.
Long Beach Firefighters Association will provide hot dogs, and the Port of Long Beach will serve shaved ice.
The event’s sponsors include: the Port of Long Beach, the Water Replenishment District of Southern California, the Long Beach Police Officers’ Association, the Long Beach Firefighters Association, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW)—Local 11, the Teachers Association of Long Beach, Avanath-Northpointe Apartments and Walgreens.
Participating City departments include: the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, the Environmental Services Bureau, the Department of Parks, Recreation & Marine and the Long Beach Public Library.
