LBT handed out free chilled water to the public on the hot Monday morning, as well as giving out reusable bags and portable cell-phone chargers to the first 100 in attendance. Attendees were also given the chance to spin a wheel to get an additional prize and take a free ride on the new bus.
Standing in front of one of the new buses at the event, LBT CEO Kenneth McDonald said the zero-emissions vehicles, which are 100-percent battery-powered, will be “a major contributor in cleaning the air in the great city of Long Beach and our neighboring communities.”
McDonald explained how the new vehicles will be distributed among the various routes in the area.
“Long Beach Transit Downtown Passport route will be 100-percent battery-powered,” he said. “We will be sending additional battery-powered buses around our greater service area so that all of our customers can experience these new, state-of-the-art buses.”
He said the first 10 battery buses will be deployed into service in November.
“LBT is dedicated to making everyday life better for our customers, but also for the entire community we serve,” McDonald said. “Reducing our carbon emissions by thousands of pounds daily is a demonstration of that dedication to our community.”
