Celebrating the dead… and the living

The Museum of Latin American Art’s (MOLAA) Dia de los Muertos celebration from 8pm to midnight will honor three Hispanic women with its second-annual Spirit Award.
The honorees are: Maria Teresa Kumar, president and CEO of Voto Latino; Luz Maria Doria, vice president and executive producer of Univision’s “Despierta America,” ; and Maestra Ofelia Esparza, artist and educator renowned for creating Day of the Dead altar installations for more than 30 years.

The plot thickens

The Historical Society of Long Beach (HSLB) will mark 21 years of storytelling at Sunnyside Cemetery and its inhabitants with the annual Historical Cemetery Tour from 8:30am to noon at 1095 Willow St.
Costumed actors will present stories of those buried at the site. Presentations will be from 9am to 2:40pm, and visitors are also free to roam the premises on a self-guided tour.
Snacks and drinks will be available for purchase. Tickets are: $20 for general admission; $15 for HSLB members; $8 for those ages 5 to 18; and $1 for children under 5.

Sunday, Oct. 30
Harvesting a good time

Rancho Los Alamitos will host its Children’s Fall Harvest Festival from noon to 4pm in an event that includes games in the barnyard and harvest crafts. The event is free. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
Those who attend are encouraged to arrive in costume for a parade at 2pm. Volunteers of the CSULB Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies will teach kids how to do their own magic tricks. Stand-up comedy magic by Rob Rasner will also be included.

Free fun!

The Calvary Chapel Signal Hill is hosting its free annual Let Him Shine celebration from 6pm to 10pm at Signal Hill Elementary School, 2285 Walnut Ave.
Carnival games, rides, hot dogs, popcorn and cotton candy will be serviced at no charge. Free candy will also be distributed. Live presentations of music, art demonstrations and illusion tricks will be featured, including a break-dancing performance.

Saturday, Nov. 5
“Face” the music

Downtown Long Beach’s third-annual Dia de los Muertos celebration will be held on Pine Avenue between 6th and 7th streets from 5pm to 10pm.
Live music from Sweet and Tender Hooligans will be featured. Art displays and face-paint designs in honor of the holiday will be included. Food vendors and community organizations will be present, as well.
