LBPD officers responded to the scene around 8:35am when a person was heard screaming inside the garage, according to LBPD Sgt. Brad Johnson at the scene Thursday. The odor of gasoline was in the air, and natural gas in the area was shut off in response to the situation.
Johnson said at press time that the person who was screaming was believed to be the same suspect inside the home. The situation was ongoing and fluid at around 12:30pm before press time. Officials were engaged in a stand-off situation with the suspect, and Johnson said officers were trying to end the incident peacefully.
No further updates of the situation were available on scene. The Long Beach SWAT team, Long Beach Search & Rescue and ambulances were present at the crime area.
Nearby schools and residents in the area were evacuated, according to an LBPD press release.
At 2:24pm, Marlene Arrona of the LBPD Media Relations Detail emailed the Signal Tribune, stating that the suspect had been arrested without incident.
At press time, it was unclear if the garage situation was related to an earlier incident involving a stolen vehicle at 46th Street and Atlantic Avenue, Johnson said. At 7:25am Thursday morning, LBPD officers responded to the 400 block of San Antonio Drive regarding a traffic collision that hit the garage of a home. Officers found these two incidents were related, and the car that struck the garage was the same one that was stolen earlier that morning. That suspect fled the scene.
