The nonprofit Community Action Team (CAT) is again looking to recognize local “unsung heroes” — “ordinary citizens who are doing extraordinary things” — and is seeking nominations.
Fashioned after the CNN program Heroes, the sixth annual Long Beach Heroes awards cycle is expected to give out about $6,000 at a Jan. 15 dinner/awards ceremony, according to CAT organizer Justin Rudd. The event is funded by CAT’s Long Beach Turkey Trot. Semi-finalists won’t be revealed until the event.
Awardees will receive $500 or $1,000 checks at the ceremony, Rudd said.
“We’ll be honoring ordinary, unsung citizens who exemplify the spirit of Long Beach caring and giving,” Rudd said. “About $6,000 [is] to be awarded to unsung heroes. The public is welcome to attend for $10 at the door, if they RSVP to Justin@JustinRudd.com.”
Nominations may include a relative, friend or co-worker who is having an impact in the Long Beach area.
“In every neighborhood, there are ‘unsung heroes’— volunteers and paid professionals who go well beyond their expected duties,” according to a press release from CAT. “Perhaps the person you nominate is active in education, the environment, animal welfare, youth or sports. Or, maybe there is no one ‘category’ for which the person champions. We want to know about people you think should be recognized. We want to recognize the unsung heroes and help them to financially continue doing what they are doing.”
The program does not allow repeat finalists. Those interested in nominating someone are asked to double-check with them before making nominations.
“We highly encourage you to make sure the person you want to nominate can attend the awards dinner at 6pm on Sunday, Jan. 15 at Bay Shore Church in Belmont Shore,” the press release states. “The nominees and nominators must be able to attend if selected as semi-finalists.”
