A SHORE THING
The Belmont Shore Residents Association will hold their regular monthly meeting tonight at 6:00 at the Bay Shore Library. Richard Cameron, director of Environmental Planning for the Port of Long Beach, will be the featured speaker. He will be discussing the environmental plans and activities of the port and their efforts to improve air and water quality.
All residents of Belmont Shore are invited to attend. The BSRA represents homeowners and renters in the Belmont Shore area, and invites new members.
A RIVETING STORY
Everyone is invited to attend the Wrigley Area Neighborhood Alliance meeting for the story of “Rosie the Riveter” as told by 5th District Councilmember Gerrie Schipske, author of Rosie the Riveter, Long Beach. Books will be available for $20 with some of the proceeds going toward funding programs related to the Rosie the Riveter Park at the southwest corner of Conant St. and Stearns. READING, WRITING AND RECITING
The Orpheus/Apollo chapter of the California Federation of Chaparral Poets ‘ monthly meeting will be at the Dana Branch Library, 3680 Atlantic Blvd., on Friday, Jan. 9 from 12:30pm to 3pm. RELEAF EFFORT
The Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association is looking for 20 volunteers to help plant eight magnolia trees on Long Beach Boulevard Saturday, Jan. 10. This project is a partnership with the City of Long Beach Department of Public Works as part of the BKBIA’s “Beautify the Boulevard” program. Volunteers are needed to help dig holes, plant, and mulch the trees provided by the City of Long Beach. John Royce of California Heights Releaf will be leading the planting and provide instruction. THE WRITE STUFF
Book by Authors announces free writing workshops open to the public. Attendees can learn about playwriting, fiction writing, poetry writing, and getting published. Each workshop features guest lecturers from Alive Theatre, Teach for America and the California Writer’s Club. The Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association and Electronic Waste Recycling are hosting an e-Waste Drive Saturday, Jan. 17, from 9am to 3pm at the North Division Police Substation (parking at Atlantic and Del Amo). Items collected include: monitors, CRT screens, plasma screens, televisions, LCD screens, laptops, printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, microwaves, computer towers, stereo systems, cell phones, etc. (basically anything that plugs in, runs on batteries, or has a wire). BRUNCH BUNCH
The Brotherhood and Sisterhood of Temple Beth David, Westminster, are hosting a joint brunch on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 10:30am. Featured speaker Dalia Taft (archivist for the Orange County Jewish Historical Society) will show how many of Orange County’s early Jewish pioneers were actively involved in local commerce and politics while still maintaining their Jewish identity. Jews have been in Orange County since 1858, when it was still a part of Los Angeles, and have made significant contributions ever since. The lecture includes a montage of old photos, period newspaper announcements and advertisements. The program will focus on the first 50 years of Jewish settlement in Orange County, from 1858 to 1908. Reservation deadline is January 14. Cost is: $12 for adults in advance, $15 at the door; children 12 and under $5 advance, $6 at the door.
