It seems that folks are really enjoying our resurrection of our old feature known as “Reminiscing.” After recently hearing praises on the vintage photos and memories that I have been running in my column, I knew I would be on the lookout for more items to share with our readers.
A week or so ago, while scanning through Facebook, I saw a perfect pair of pictures and a dandy descriptive message sharing the author’s recollections of his days at Wilson High School. I quickly reached out to the poster, Tom Poe, and he agreed to let me share the information with you, our lovely advertisers and readers. I am proud to run these pictures. After all, these are photographs of Wilson High School sport superstars. I graduated from Wilson six years later! Here’s what Tom wrote:

1967 was gonna be our year. With a number of starters back from the varsity and the players from our championship Bee squad coming up to Varsity, we all thought this would be the year when we could challenge perennial Moore League Champion Downey High for the league championship. Unfortunately, the star goalie from the Bees, Craig Mathison, decided to quit water polo, and that made us vulnerable. Games we should have won, even without Craig, became losses— to Poly and Millikan— and we ended up a disappointing third in league. It could have been worse, but we salvaged our last game of the season against Mark LeGault and Lakewood. LeGault was huge and a scoring machine. I like to think I played a big role that day as I was the center back and defended him most of the game and kept his scoring to a minimum. It was the only game I ever fouled out of, but well worth it. Here’s a photo from our yearbook with us looking cool with our shirts and ties in the pool!
