Time marches on and our new president’s inauguration is less than a week away. Many of us will be glued to the television or radio in order to participate in this historic event.
Helping to make it more of a celebration, locals may want to mosey over to Long Beach City College (LBCC) and enjoy their “Inauguation Celebration.” According to a recent press release, the Associated Student Body of LBCC, Student Life and the Department of History and Political Science is inviting the public to join in their Inaugural Celebration, Tuesday, January 20 as the swearing-in of Barack Obama is aired in the student centers of both campuses throughout the day, beginning at 8am.
At the Liberal Arts Campus (located at Carson Street and Clark Avenue), a Social Justice Fair comprised of various political, social and civic organizations will be featured to inform students of causes they can be involved with on campus.
LBCC Professor, Dr. Julian Del Gaudio, will also present “Democratic Presidents, Economic Crisis and the Possibilities for Progressive Change” at 11am at LAC and 12:30pm in the Student Center on PCC (Pacific Coast Highway and Orange Avenue).

On another political note, the city of Signal Hill just sent us over a press release regarding their upcoming election. It states that the City of Signal Hill is actively seeking poll workers for the City’s General Municipal Election scheduled for Tuesday, March 3, 2009. The City is especially looking for individuals who speak Spanish to work the polls.
“Poll workers are essential to ensuring that elections are a success,” said City Clerk Kathee Pacheco. “The City truly recognizes and appreciates the dedication and hard work each election clerk and inspector contributes on Election Day.”
The City will compensate each election inspector $125, and each clerk $100 for working all day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided. In addition, each precinct board member will also be compensated an additional $25 for attending a mandatory training class. The polls will be open from 7am to 8pm.
According to the press release you must be a registered voter in the state of California in order to serve as a precinct board member. For more information, please call the City Clerk’s office at (562) 989-7305.
Speaking of the Signal Hill election, I was just informed that Concerned Citizens of Signal Hill (CCSH) is planning a Candidates Forum to take place February 19, 6:30pm at the Signal Hill Community Center. There are four candidates running for three council seats: incumbents Mike Noll, Ed Wilson and Ellen Ward, as well as challenger Edward Villanueva. We will keep you posted on the details of the event.
