Assembly member Bonnie Lowenthal was named chair of the Assembly Committee on Aging and Long-Term Care last week.
“I’m very happy about this assignment,” said Lowenthal, D-Long Beach. “This is a very challenging policy area. The Baby Boom generation is fast becoming the Aging Boom generation, and we have to be ready for them.”
Lowenthal has already begun meeting with aging experts and consultants, several of whom were pleased that someone with so much local and regional government experience would assume control of the committee.
“We are pleased that someone with Assemblywoman Lowenthal’s credentials will chair the Assembly’s Aging and Long-Term Care Committee,” said Sandra Fitzpatrick, executive director of the California Commission on Aging. “We are confident that Chairperson Lowenthal’s understanding of issues related to disabilities, poverty, non-English speakers, and mental health needs will help her to easily recognize similar concerns that exist within California’s older adult population.”
Bill Powers, spokesman for the California Alliance for Retired Americans, said: “The Assembly Committee on Aging and Long-Term Care has been a leader in efforts to protect and improve the lives of seniors in our state. We look forward to working with her to continue the important work of the committee.”
