The recent food drive organized by Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster and Food Finders resulted in an overwhelming response from Long Beach residents. According to Food Finders’ founder Arlene Mercer, the organization collected 15,854 pounds of food from 32 drop-off locations throughout the city from Nov. 19 — Dec. 31, 2008. This equates to 33,928 meals or three square meals for 11,309 people.
“Because the need is so great, I wish we could get this kind of response all the time,” Mercer said. “Thanks to the mayor’s involvement, more focus has been given to the cause. We want those who have lost their jobs to know that they don’t need to decide between rent or food. With continued support, we’ll be able to provide nutritious meals to you. Just call us and we can refer you to one of our partner agencies.”
Foster said that regional food banks saw an unprecedented request for help but the community’s response of assistance was overwhelming. “I want to thank Food Finders for helping Long Beach residents in need. I also want to remind people that Food Finders and other organizations need help year-round— it’s not just for the holiday season,” he said.
