In Long Beach, e-waste recycling is making a difference in the lives of children through a nonprofit organization called Komputers 4 R Kids. Lafayette Elementary and St. Maria Goretti School recently teamed up with Komputers 4 R Kids to provide a very much needed service for the community by facilitating e-waste collection events.
E-waste collection events provide a way to properly and safely recycle unneeded and non-functional electronic equipment such as TVs, computer monitors and computers. Kettering Classical Elementary will be hosting such an event on Saturday, Feb. 7.
Komputers 4 R Kids collects, repairs and refurbishes donated surplus computers from government and private sector sources. These computers are then distributed to public schools, private schools and students in the community. The primary goal is to ensure that students of all ages acquire the tools and skills they need to succeed in the future by providing equitable access to technology resources.
The proliferation of computer technology into mainstream society over the last ten years has created a societal imperative to redirect prematurely retired computers. The mission of Komputers 4 R Kids is to provide environmental benefits by ensuring that computer systems are reused and recycled so that they do not end up in our landfills. Komputers 4 R Kids provides realistic hope that limited funding of families and schools does not preclude access to useful technology.
To benefit the community and the children that they serve, Komputers 4 R Kids has also provided parents with links on its website to free anti-virus software, anti-spyware, disk-wiping software and web-filtering programs to assist them in protecting their children on the internet.
