A loss in the neighborhood
I am so sorry to hear this. [“Longtime Signal Hill business owner succumbs to breast cancer: Tina Lee operated Luu’s Dry Cleaners and Alteration for 25 years,” Dec. 8, 2017] I was a frequent customer until we moved. She always had such a wonderful smile, always remembered my name and did quality work. She will be missed. Love and prayers for comfort to her family.

A tough decision
I was surprised at the number of unfamiliar people who filled up Tuesday’s [Signal Hill City] Council meeting.
The reason that most of them were there was to give an opinion on the possible reorganization of Ed Wilson out of the mayor’s position due to the bad publicity he brought to the city by allegedly engaging in domestic violence in a spa at the Hotel Maya, as reported in the Press-Telegram and Signal Tribune. Most of the unfamiliar faces spoke glowingly about Ed and asked the council to wait until a judge’s decision. A few of us did speak to the real issue— that Ed as mayor is the city representative at all times and that he brought embarrassment to the city by engaging in the activity. It seems reasonable that the violence happened and someone at the scene was sufficiently concerned to call the police.
So why did our city council let him off the hook? In a way, they approved his actions. Lori Woods spoke eloquently and correctly. I do not understand why Robert Copeland and Tina Hansen didn’t feel the same as Lori. I also don’t understand why more “concerned citizens” did not speak up.
Domestic violence is a form of sexual abuse, which is in the headlines every day. I am very disappointed that more people don’t care.

Innovation commendation
A few years ago, I had an idea to activate and invigorate the Small Business Development Center at 309 Pine Ave. and rename it in honor of one of Long Beach’s best— Shaun Lumachi.
Shaun began his career as the vice president of Government Affairs for the Long Beach Area Chamber of Commerce in 2002. He then worked as a public-policy consultant for his chamber advocacy business in 2003. In 2007, Shaun co-founded the Long Beach Post, an online publication that covers city news, government and sports. He was also an active member of the Long Beach community who served as a member of nearly a dozen nonprofit boards. In 2007, Long Beach Magazine honored Shaun as one of the “Most Innovative Minds in Long Beach.”
Shaun married his longtime girlfriend Deziré in 2009 and lived in the Belmont Shore community. His commendable work continued until his untimely death on December 3, 2011, while he was on a business trip in Florida representing our city’s Workforce Investment Board.
Shaun always asked, “What’s next?” Early next year, the Small Business Development Center will be renamed the Shaun Lumachi Innovation Center. This facility will be a state-of-the-art hub for creativity and innovation for entrepreneurs in downtown— all of the things that Shaun embodied. This is “what’s next!”
