LB's annual 'Treecycling' program kicks off

As the holiday season wraps up, the Long Beach Department of Public Works, Environmental Services Bureau (ESB) has kicked off its annual Holiday Tree Recycling program, known as “Treecycling.”
The program provides residents multiple options for disposal of live holiday trees free of charge, while keeping the trees out of the trash. Through Jan. 12, residents can drop off trees at locations throughout the city, as shown at longbeach-recycles.org.
Each year, the City collects an average of over 200 tons of holiday trees, which equal approximately ten- to fifteen-thousand trees, officials said. Trees that are taken to any of the 12 drop-off locations around the city, as well as those collected during the Citywide Treecycling Pick-Up, are sent to a chipping facility to be turned into landscaping mulch, or to a biomass conversion facility for energy generation.
Treecycling drop-off locations are open weekdays from 9am to 5pm, and Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 2pm through Jan. 12. The Citywide Treecycling Pick-Up day will occur on Saturday, Jan. 13. Residents with City refuse collection service may place their tree where trash is normally collected by 7am that day.
All trees must have decorations and stands removed, and trees over 12 feet tall should be cut in half. No artificial trees or trees generated from businesses are allowed at Treecycling drop-off locations.
