CAPTIONS CAPTURED
Hearing Loss Association, Long Beach/Lakewood Chapter is a support group offering education on coping skills and resources to help survive in a hearing world. HLA meets at 6:30pm on the second Thursday of each month at the Weingart Senior Center, 5220 Oliva Avenue, in Lakewood. Admission is free. Reservations are not necessary. Today’s guest speaker is Nanci Linke-Ellis, who will be speaking on “Captions, Captions, Captions.” Linke-Ellis is on the California HLA board of directors and president of the Santa Monica Chapter. She is very involved in captioning for movies, theater, etc. Meetings at the Long Beach/Lakewood chapter have been captioned for the past two years and made possible from a grant from Boeing’s Employee Community Fund.
UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA
Cambrian College, 5199 E. Pacific Coast Highway, Suite #100C, is presenting a free workshop in association with The Alzheimers Association. Patty Mouton, director of education for the Alzheimers Association will present “About Dementia: Understanding the Basics & Improving Communication” Friday, March 20 from 1pm to 3pm. Rancho Los Cerritos Historic Site, 4600 Virginia Road, is hosting a lecture and bird walk entitled “The Birds of Spring” Saturday, March 21 at 10am. Gates open at 9:30am for light refreshments. TRAIN TO AVOID PAIN
A free fitness-training program will start Tuesday, March 24 to prepare Wrigley River Runners for an injury-free 5K and 10K run. Runners will get 15-percent off at Buono’s Pizzeria and Juice it Up. The intention is to create an environment that will support the entire family in a fun-filled sport. This training program is designed for the first-time runner as well as the advanced runner. “BEST FOR WOMEN”
Soroptimist International is a worldwide organization for women in management and professions working through service projects to advance human rights and the status of women. The Long Beach chapter is hosting its annual “Women Who Make a Difference” awards lunch on Saturday, April 4 at 11:30am at the Long Beach Marriott Hotel located at the Long Beach Airport. BEING RESOURCEFUL
The Disabled Resources Center, 2750 E. Spring St. Ste. 100, hosts a Women’s Peer Support Group every Wednesday at 1:30pm with group discussion, speakers on a variety of topics, outings and crafts. On Thursdays at 1:30pm there is a Co-Ed Peer Support Group which has group discussion on a variety of topics including “Privacy and Your Medical Records,” speakers and outings.
