The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Long Beach branch hosted its annual STEM conference, which emphasizes the principles of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, at Long Beach City College last Friday. The conference provided STEM workshops and hands-on activities, such as the excavation of fossils in paleontology classes, for local middle-school girls. Cacilia Kim, co-president of AAUW, said the event is an opportunity to introduce new academic disciplines to girls and demonstrate other career paths that are not female-dominated. The guest speaker at the event was Danielle Bridgewater, who shared the struggles she encountered as a 15-year-old foster child.
