In inspiring girls and young women to become leaders, the new Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles (GSGLA) recently appointed several area business and industry leaders to its board of directors. The newly formed council, the result of a December 1 merger of six area councils, serves 45,000 girls and 22,000 volunteers in Los Angeles County and parts of Kern and San Bernardino counties.
The new council has appointed Boeing Enterprise Engineering Curriculum Leader and Program Manager Dr. Kim Armstrong of Long Beach and Coldwell Banker Realtor Debbie Thorpe of Long Beach to its board.
Armstrong leads the Engineering Learning, Training & Development organization, located in Long Beach, and also serves as the deputy IPT leader for the Enterprise Learning Management System Curriculum team. She will serve on the board as a director at large and a member of the Board Development Committee.
She is a graduate of Leadership Long Beach and teaches in the Professional Studies Department at CSULB. She also serves on several boards for local nonprofit organizations. She also volunteers as a veterinary assistant at the Aquarium of the Pacific.
Armstrong holds an associate of arts degree in Telecommunications; a bachelor’s of arts degree in radio-TV engineering; a master’s degree in education— instructional systems design; a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies— multiculturalism, curriculum and development; a teaching credential for adult education; a senior professional in human resources certification; and a doctorate in education, specializing in organizational leadership.
“I’m proud to serve on the board of Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles and to help the council in its mission of building girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place,” Armstrong said.
Thorpe, who will serve on the board as a director at large, has been involved with Girl Scouts for many years. She is a lifetime member of the organization and recently served as a Girl Scout delegate at national council sessions, on the board of directors, Nominating Committee, Special Events Task Group, and Realignment Task Group for the Girl Scout Council of Greater Long Beach— one of the six area councils that merged to form the new Girl Scout Council.
Her memberships include National Association of Realtors, California Association of Realtors, Graduate Real Estate Institute, certified residential specialist, senior residential specialist, graduate E-Pro professional, and notary public, Graduate Leadership Long Beach, Daughters of Scotia, and United Scottish Society.
” It is a privilege to be a part of Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles,” said Thorpe. “I look forward to developing community partnerships and unsurpassed leadership programs that will help girls grow into self-confident, courageous and competent women— our leaders of tomorrow.”
