On and off the runway

Local students had the opportunity to walk the runway and celebrate their achievements at the annual Cameo Fashion Show Extravaganza on Saturday, March 17 at The Westin Long Beach. The students were recognized for their involvement with the mentorship program that the professional auxiliary branch of the Long Beach Assistance League, or Cameo, offers. Volunteers with the auxiliary become mentors who eventually provide one-on-one support to help local high-school students and Long Beach City College re-entry women with academic endeavors and extra-curriculars. The mentees, with guidance from their mentors, learn about financial-aid opportunities for college, apply for paid internships and tour educational institutions such as the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. Nearly 600 tickets were sold, and the money raised during the event will fund activities and services that the program provides for its students. The show’s theme was “La Dolce Vita,” and according to Hajra Saeed, Cameo’s press and public-relations chairman, it resembles the mentorship program in a way. “We were just talking about that our goal in mentorship is to provide a good life and a good future for our students,” Saeed said. “So, [the theme] gives them the tools for success.”
