Lee Martin, a Vietnam veteran, served as a public school teacher before working for the Boy Scouts.
Lee Martin, scout executive for the Long Beach Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, has announced his retirement, effective May 1.
Martin has served the Long Beach Area Council for more than 10 years. Prior to arriving in Long Beach, he served several other Boy Scout councils in the western region of the Boy Scouts of America in various capacities during his 23 years of service to the Boy Scouts.
The announcement was made to the Board of Directors during its March 25 meeting. “The legacy I leave behind is that of leadership,” Martin said. “I leave behind the next generation of volunteers who will lead the Long Beach Area Council into the next 100 years of scouting. Our Council’s youth are in good hands under this leadership.”
“The Council has grown and changed significantly since Lee Martin’s arrival,” said Sandy Mayuga, Council president. “However, providing the highest quality of service to our youth has always come first, and Lee Martin made sure of that.”
Prior to joining the Boy Scouts, Martin was a public school teacher and a decorated Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Army Special Forces. During the last 10 1/2 years, Martin oversaw renovations to the Sea Scout Base, and the outdoor pools at Camp Will J. Reid and Camp Tahquitz. Martin made the Council Scout Shop ADA compliant and helped oversee other improvements at the Council’s camps. He also worked hard to insure the Council’s 640-acre Camp Tahqutiz in the San Bernardino Mountains was cleared of dead trees and brush for better fire suppression and implemented an emergency evacuation protocol. During his tenure, the Council was consistently recognized by the National Boy Scouts of America as a quality Council.
