Tax time has passed, and for those wondering what to do with all of their old receipts and financial documents, here’s some advice: If you no longer need them, shred them.
Eighth District Councilwoman Rae Gabelich is hosting a Shred Fest Saturday, April 25 from 10am to 1pm. The event will take place at Scherer Park in front of the North Division Police Substation at the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Del Amo Blvd.
Long Beach residents and business owners will have the opportunity to properly dispose of old financial documents and personal records such as credit card and bank statements, pre-approved credit card applications and receipts. Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the United States. It affects 9 million victims per year, with annual losses that exceed 50 billion dollars.
“With the growing concerns about identity theft, this is a good way to safely dispose of your old records and paperwork,” said Gabelich.
Up to five standard-size office boxes of papers per vehicle will be shredded for free. A $5 fee will be charged for each additional box.
The boxes can be dropped off using the “drive-thru” service that will be provided. A local company, Future Shredding, Inc., will destroy the documents on-site and then recycle the paper shreds.
