The Long Beach Water Department invites the community to a free Environmental Fair at Recreation Park, 5001 Deukmejian Drive, Saturday, May 2, 11am to 3pm. Residents can: speak to landscape and sustainability experts; learn the latest in home water conservation techniques; bag a ton of free conservation give-a-ways; let the kids explore the Fun Zone; take an eco-tour of the Colorado Lagoon; and buy native California plants. The City of Long Beach Animal Care Services is sponsoring a “Be Kind to Animals Week” Microchip & License Clinic Sunday, May 3 from 10am to 2pm at the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal Village, 7700 E. Residents are invited to a second community meeting to discuss revitalization of the Leeway Sailing Center. TAKE A HIKE!
The Long Beach Sierra Club will present “Outings 101,” for anyone who wants to experience the thrill of seeing quail, deer and mountain goat in their own environment, or to look out from a mountaintop to see the Southland spread below and the Pacific Ocean beyond. The introduction to the program will take place at 7:30pm Wednesday, May 6, at the Environmental Services Bureau, 2929 E. Willow Street. It is free and open to the public. Miller Children’s Hospital will present guest speaker Elizabeth McGlynn, PhD, associate director, RAND Health, Distinguished Chair, Health Care Quality, who will be speaking about the quality of health care delivered to U.S. children— results from a national study. HELPING DISABLED VETERANS
The nonprofit Disabled American Veterans (DAV) offers help for veterans who feel confused about benefits and services they’ve earned but that change from one year to the next. The DAV Mobile Service Office will be at Mayfair Park, 5720 Clark Avenue, in Lakewood, Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10 from 8am to 4pm, to personally provide counseling and claim filing assistance.
