In her role, Zia will preside over the meetings of the board and act as its chief spokesperson, among other duties. The positions are elected annually among the five board members, to a one-year term.
Zia represents Area 3 and was elected in 2014. A first-generation immigrant, she was the first woman to graduate with a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering from the University of Tehran. She later earned a master of science degree in civil engineering from the University of California, Irvine. She was sworn in for her second term during Tuesday’s meeting.
Malauulu is the first Latina elected to the LBCCD Board of Trustees to represent Area 2. She has: a bachelor’s degree in journalism from California State University, Northridge; a master’s degree in educational administration from California State University, Dominguez Hills; and four K-14 bilingual teaching credentials. She was first elected in 2016.
Dr. Virginia Baxter, representing Area 5, and new trustee Uduak-Joe Ntuk, representing Area 1, were also sworn in during the meeting.
