Thomas Man Kim, the 77-year-old man accused of fatally shooting Long Beach Fire Department Captain Dave Rosa during an emergency call on June 25, died on Sunday, Aug. 5 while in custody of Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Kim died of a pre-existing illness, according to the sheriff’s department, which provided no further information.
In the early morning of June 25, Rosa and other firefighters responded to a call at the Covenant Manor senior-residence facility, which is located in the 600 block of East 4th Street, after an explosion Kim had allegedly initiated. When firefighters arrived, Kim opened fire on them, shooting Rosa, his coworker Ernesto Torres and another resident of the home, killing Rosa and injuring the other two men.
Later that day, Rosa’s body was escorted to the LA County Coroner’s Office with full honors.
Thousands attended the July 3 memorial service for Rosa in the arena of the Long Beach Convention Center. The event, which was open to the public, drew public-service officials from around the country.
