A man who acted erratically and was breaking items inside his residence was pronounced dead Monday after Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officers detained him and took him into custody, according to the department this week.
At approximately 1:20am Monday, Sept. 17, the LBPD dispatched officers to the 100 block of Santa Ana Avenue, where they observed a man, who appeared to be alone inside his residence and had multiple lacerations on his body, yelling and breaking items.
The officers determined at the scene that the subject, who was bleeding profusely, was possibly wounded while breaking his windows. They concluded the subject was “in an altered state” and required medical assistance, which led to the request of Long Beach Fire Department paramedics to the scene.
The department wrote in its press release that the suspect then exited his residence and, based on his continued erratic behavior, officers attempted to detain him. When the subject failed to comply with officers’ orders and began struggling with them, he was tased and subsequently taken into custody. Following the encounter, he became unresponsive, and paramedics immediately began life-saving measures. The subject was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
According to the LBPD, the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office will determine the official cause of death and withhold the identity of the man pending notification of next of kin. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene and will be conducting an independent investigation, the department added.
