CELEBRATING WHEN ABE WAS A BABE
The west coast premiere of Bicentennial Symphony, composer Roy Harris’s musical statement on U.S. history and slavery, will be the highlight of Long Beach’s 13th annual Juneteenth event, which this year will celebrate the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth. Long Beach Parks, Recreation & Marine, Partners of Parks and the Central Area Association will present Juneteenth on Saturday, June 13 from noon to 5pm at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 1950 Lemon Ave. Call (562) 570-4405.
A TAXING SITUATION
Long Beach Taxpayers Association will welcome Gabriella Holt at its meeting on Monday, June 15. Holt, the CEO of the newly formed Citizens for California Reform, will speak on her 2010 ballot initiative to convert the California Legislature from full time to part time. Discussion on local ballot initiatives will follow. The meeting will be at Ecco’s Pizza, 2123 Bellflower Blvd. from 7pm to 9pm. Members and non-members welcome free of charge.
COFFEE TALK WITH THE DOC
St. Mary Medical Center Senior Health, a community program designed to help seniors manage medical and health-related issues in a comfortable and friendly setting, will host its monthly “Coffee Talk!with the Doc” on Tuesday, June 16, from 1:30pm to 2:30pm in the Health Enhancement Center at 1055 Linden Avenue. The lecture presented by Dr. Bettina Kehrle is entitled “Cholesterol!The Good, the Bad and the Ugly!”

The Central Basin Municipal Water District will sponsor “Gardening with Blue,” a plant-identification and plant-use seminar that covers 25 native and low-water-use plants on Thursday, June 18 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm at the Signal Hill Park Community Center, 1780 E. Hill St. Topics will include: garden design for homeowners, benefits of using California-friendly plants, sprinkler system basics for homeowners and an introduction to irrigation scheduling. LIVE FROM LONG BEACH, IT’S!.
The Long Beach Playhouse, 5021 East Anaheim St., will host an evening of comedy and entertainment with a performance of SNL (Sunday Night Live) Comedy on Sunday, June 28. Proceeds will benefit two non-profit organizations: Friends of Long Beach Animals and Animal Match Rescue Team, for spay and neuter programs, humane education, and animal welfare. The evening begins at 7pm with happy hour and show time at 8pm. Tickets are $15 per person if ordered in advance or $20 at the door.
