What does a typical day look like in “the Knolls?” For 1,440 minutes, beginning at noon on the summer solstice, Saturday, June 20, 2009, and ending at noon on Sunday, June 21, 2009, life in Bixby Knolls will be immortalized through digital photography.
The 2009 Summer Shutters 2.0 Digital Photo Contest sets out to document what Bixby Knolls looks like in 2009 and serve as a time capsule for the archives of the Historical Society of Long Beach. Sponsored by the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association, the contest will also allow participants to be as creative as possible with digital manipulation of images for the “Best Digital Art” category. Those interested in creating an art piece can take images from Bixby Knolls and create something spectacular using all the tricks available in digital photography.
The photo canvas includes the businesses, the people, the environment, the streets, and the subtleties of this special area of Long Beach all during a 24-hour period.
The BKBIA will display the overall winning images per category and best 50 images as a First Fridays exhibit, Friday, July 3, at the Expo building, 4321 Atlantic Avenue, 8pm—10pm.
Entry is free, and entering the contest is simple. Participants will drop off a CD with their five best snapshots to the BKBIA office at 4313 Atlantic Avenue, or email to photo@bixbyknollsinfo.com, by 5pm on Wednesday, June 24 and the entries received will be juried. Winning photos will be selected on criteria such as photographic excellence, visual impact and artistic quality.
